Ceist:48 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the Amsterdam Treaty referendum will take place on the same day as the proposed referendum on a Northern Ireland settlement. [5552/98]

The likely date for the referendum on the Treaty of Amsterdam is 22 May. As Deputy Bruton will be aware, the talks in relation to the peace process are continuing in Belfast on an intensive basis. It would be premature at this stage to say that a referendum in relation to any outcome of these talks will take place on the same day as the referendum on the Amsterdam Treaty.
