Vol. 490 No. 1

Written Answers - Licensing Laws.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

69 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when a review of the licensing laws for public houses will take place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8413/98]

Michael Ring

Ceist:

70 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to change the licensing laws; when he hopes to have the proposals in place; and if this will take place before the summer recess. [9503/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 69 and 70 together.

The Deputy will be aware that the Select Committee on Legislation and Security of the previous Dáil was engaged in a broad review of the licensing laws and that work is now continuing under a subcommittee of the new Joint Committee on Justice, Equality and Women's Rights. I have already indicated, in the debate in the House on 31 March 1998, that the recommendations which emerge from that work of the subcommittee will be given detailed consideration by my Department, with a view to any amending legislation that may be necessary. My Department's examination of the question of legislative proposals, taking into account the work of the subcommittee, will be progressed as quickly as possible.
