Vol. 490 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Service Card.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

22 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if he will consider asking the Data Protection Commissioner to review the operation of the public service card at the end of a 12 month period in view of the concern expressed by a number of groups and individuals regarding the card provided for in the Social Welfare Act, 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10043/98]

The operation of the card will be subject to monitoring and review by the interdepartmental management group on the integrated social services system.

If data protection issues arise, these will be discussed with the Data Protection Commissioner in the normal way. In the circumstances, I see no need to request the Data Protection Commissioner to conduct a review as proposed by the Deputy.
