Vol. 490 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Posts.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

86 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of remedial teachers appointed to primary schools in County Wexford; the number and name of those applying for these appointments; the likely next date for a further tranche of remedial teacher appointments; and the likely extra numbers to be appointed. [10230/98]

There are 37 remedial teacher posts allocated to primary schools in County Wexford. These posts are shared between 84 schools.

My Department recently embarked on an exercise aimed at establishing the precise position regarding remedial needs in all primary schools. As part of this exercise, all schools, including those in County Wexford, have been invited to make fresh applications based on their present level of remedial need. Responses to this request are currently being received in my Department and the closing date for all such applications is 30 April 1998. In these circumstances, my Department is not yet in a position to indicate the number of applications for a remedial service which may be received from County Wexford.

My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demands from other special needs areas. I have to determine priorities and allocate available resources to best effect. I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the remedial area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible.

I can assure the Deputy that the needs of schools in County Wexford will be considered in the context of any additional remedial teacher allocations which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
