Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Litter Pollution.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

221 Ms Clune asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will ensure that all State buildings comply with the Litter Pollution Act, 1997, in view of the fact that it is now a basic duty of occupiers of property to keep the footpath or pavement in front of their property free of litter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10647/98]

Section 6 of the Litter Pollution Act, 1997, requires the occupiers of land to keep it free of litter if it is a public place or is visible to any extent from a public place. In addition, the occupiers of land adjoining a public road, in respect of which a built up area speed limit or special speed limit applies, must keep any footpaths or pavements adjoining the road in front of their properties free of litter.

I will be writing shortly to Departments and agencies and State sponsored bodies drawing their attention to the need to comply with the provisions of section 6 of the Act.
