Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Age Discrimination.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

278 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to prevent age discrimination; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10783/98]

The Employment Equality Bill, 1997, which was published on 1 December 1997 prohibits discrimination in employment on a wide range of grounds, including age. The Bill has completed its passage through the Seanad and is expected to commence Committee Stage in the Dáil next week. The legislation will apply to both public and private sectors employments and when enacted will place Ireland among the most advanced EU member states in tackling ageism in employment.

A revised Equal Status Bill, which will prohibit discrimination on the same range of grounds in non-employment areas, is being developed at present. The Bill is expected to be published later this year.
