Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

307 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will fund the appropriation of premises suited to the unique needs of children with specific learning difficulties and, in doing so, provide the Munster region with an invaluable education resource. [10655/98]

My Department recently received a submission from the special school in Cork catering for children with specific learning disability. This submission includes a proposal to re-designate the school in question as a resource centre for specific learning disability in the Munster region and includes proposals relating to staffing and accommodation needs. This submission is currently being examined by my Department's inspectorate. The question of any additional resource allocations will be considered following a comprehensive review of the situation.

Ceist:

308 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will facilitate the reintegration of children by making dual enrolment available to them and by granting a yearly allowance to cover the expenses involved in block integration projects. [10656/98]

Under present arrangements at primary level, children assessed as having specific learning disability may transfer to a special school or special class for a maximum period of two years. Such children should have completed second class in a primary school or be at least eight years of age at the time of transfer. Following their period in a special school or special class setting, the children are re-integrated into ordinary classes. Current enrolment procedures reflect the children's actual placement and resources are directed accordingly.

Second level pupils with specific learning disability are normally integrated into ordinary classes. In such situations they may receive additional tutorial support through the remedial teacher, guidance counsellor and subject teachers. Depending on the nature of the condition, they may also be eligible for special arrangements in the certificate examinations. I am aware that an application for funding for block integration projects forms part of a submission which has recently been received in my Department from a special school for children with specific learning disability. This submission is currently being examined in my Department.
