Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Constituency Review Commission Report.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

21 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the Government intends to bring forward legislation to implement the recommendations of the recent report of the Constituency Review Commission; his views on the implications for the effectiveness of the proportional representation system of the increase in three seat constituencies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10499/98]

The Government has accepted the commission's recommendations in full and an Electoral (Amendment) Bill will be introduced as soon as practicable to make the necessary changes to Dáil constituencies. As the commission is an independent body established under statute, I do not propose to comment on matters directly arising from recommendations in its report which will of course be open to debate when the Bill referred to comes before the House.
