Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Motorway Facilities.

Alan M. Dukes

Ceist:

43 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government whether a requirement to make provision for secure truck stops has ever been a part of a motorway plan; if not, the proposals, if any, he has to require such a provision in road development plans to be drawn up by the National Roads Authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10512/98]

While roads legislation permits the provision of service areas (including parking) in motorway developments, no such facilities have been included in motorway schemes made by Irish road authorities so far. The reasons for this may relate to our relatively limited length of motorway sections and the uncertain commercial viability of such services.

Local road authorities and the National Roads Authority have been advised of their powers in relation to service facilities for motorways and are open to considering relevant proposals by interested parties.
