Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Voluntary Housing Schemes.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

50 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will consider a purchase scheme for some of the voluntary housing schemes, in particular the rural resettlement projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10483/98]

The voluntary housing sector in this country is relatively small and is at a development stage. If the sector is to grow and contribute further to meeting housing needs in the coming years, it is necessary that its limited housing stock be retained for renting and not sold off to tenants. I would not, therefore, favour the introduction, at this stage, of a scheme under which tenants in the voluntary housing sector might purchase their dwellings.
