Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Government Renewal.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

62 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the procedures by which town commissions are upgraded to urban council status; and his views on whether Bandon, County Cork, should be considered for upgrading. [10489/98]

No urban district council has been established since the foundation of the State, due in part to defects in the outdated legislation which applies.

I intend to bring forward legislation later this year which will modernise local government law generally. This will contain a modern statutory framework for local authority structures, including new arrangements for town local authorities. Any proposals for the change in status of town authorities must be considered in the context of the proposed legislation.
