Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Professional Placement Practice.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

276 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the reason that the Western Health Board has refused work placements for third year environmental health students when other health boards have no difficulties; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that four students have lost six weeks valuable experience because of the impasse; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11747/98]

Professional placement practice for third year students of environmental health is a matter for the health boards and the Dublin Institute of Technology, Cathal Brugha Street, and my Department is not directly involved in the matter. However, officials of my Department were aware of the difficulties being experienced in relation to the students assigned to the Western Health Board, and requested that this Department be kept fully up-to-date regarding developments. My Department conveyed approval to the Dublin Institute of Technology for the students assigned to the Western Health Board to be placed with private industry while the matter was being settled. The Dublin Institute of Technology has confirmed that the matters of concern to the Western Health Board have now been satisfactorily resolved and that normal practice placements resumed as of yesterday, Monday, 25 May 1998.
