Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Action Against Tobacco Industry.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

313 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children his intentions in relation to the request from persons suffering from smoking related illnesses for financial assistance to take a case against the tobacco industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12280/98]

I am advised there are a number of cases being brought against the tobacco industry by law firms on behalf of a large number of clients. I have already advised the Dáil that I do not consider it the best use of public funds to provide financial assistance for each individual case taken through individual firms of solicitors.
