Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

337 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his Department will employ additional driver test inspectors on either a contractual or temporary basis to reduce the intolerable waiting time for tests. [11753/98]

Dick Spring

Ceist:

361 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he proposes appointing additional driver testers; and, if so, where will they be located. [12263/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 337 and 361 together.

Driver testers are recruited through open competition conducted by the Civil Service Commission. Arrangements for the holding of a competition to recruit additional permanent driver testers are well advanced and an announcement by the Civil Service Commission is expected shortly.

For the purposes of driver testing, the country is divided into six regions and successful applicants may be assigned to any of these regions. Agreement has not yet been reached with IMPACT, the driver testers union, on the deployment of contract driver testers. The matter is currently with the adjudication board, set up under arrangements agreed between the Government and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to deal with outstanding claims under the PCW pay agreement and the findings of the board are now awaited.
