Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Water Conservation Project.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

358 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason for the delay of the Dublin water conservation project for which European Union Cohesion Funds are available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12260/98]

Work is well under way on the Dublin water conservation project. The project consists of three elements, a leakage reduction programme, network rehabilitation works and the provision of water conservation infrastructure. All three elements have started. The main element of the project deals with leakage reduction. The initial phase of this element, consisting of preparatory work in relation to district metering, pressure control and water audit of leakage levels, has been completed together with the installation and replacement of bulk water meters. Leakage control terms have been established and are carrying out work for first identify and then reduce water leakage throughout the region.

Earlier this month I approved Dublin Corporation's proposal to enter into a contract with Anglian Water (Ireland) Ltd. for the main leakage reduction element of the project, and this will result in a further increase in the overall level of activity. There was no undue delay in my Department in approving this proposal and it is now a matter for Dublin Corporation and the contractor to progress the works a quickly as possible.
