Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Site Preservation.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

386 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the position of her Department in relation to the area of the Glending Woods in the ownership of the Office of Public Works; if it is intended to preserve this area as an amenity for the future; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11801/98]

To secure its preservation, a large medieval earthwork known as Rathturtle Moat and an extensive buffer zone around it was acquired by the Office of Public Works in 1995, from the then Forest Service of the Department of Energy.

The property transferred to my Department with the transfer of heritage functions in 1996. It is my intention that the site will continue to be preserved in accordance with the provisions of the National Monuments Acts, 1930-94. Currently the public can access Rathturtle from a forest track to the west of the site.
