Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Legal Aid.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

421 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the present income limits for eligibility for assistance from the Legal Aid Board; and the plans, if any, there are to increase these limits. [11974/98]

To qualify for services under the Civil Legal Aid Act, 1995, a person must meet a range of criteria, which includes income eligibility. The current eligibility limit is £7,350 per annum, disposable income. Disposable income for the purposes of the Civil Legal Aid Act, 1995, and the regulations made under that Act is the income remaining after various deductions have been made in respect of dependants, rents-mortgage, hire purchase payments, expenses incurred in travelling to and from work, income tax, social insurance etc.

I have no plans at present to alter the income limits.
