Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Syllabus.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

451 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason the technology syllabus introduced at junior certificate level some years ago has not been continued to leaving certificate level; the plans, if any, he has to introduce this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11671/98]

Technology was introduced to the junior cycle curriculum in 1989 and examined for the first time in 1992. Subsequently the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment began a review of the leaving certificate curriculum.

A draft syllabus for technology at leaving certificate has been prepared by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. The syllabus has been circulated for comments to the education partners and interested parties. Following this consultation process the syllabus will be reconsidered by the council prior to submitting it for approval to my Department.

I await the proposal from the NCCA regarding the proposed implementation of the syllabus into schools.
