Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Syllabus.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

469 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science the obligations, if any, his Department has to provide continuing classes, up to leaving certificate standard, in subjects such as technical graphics for students who have taken these subjects up to junior certificate and who are not being offered a choice by the school, notwithstanding their desire to continue these subjects. [11763/98]

The "Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools" states that, in the case of the established leaving certificate, the approved course for recognised senior pupils must include not less than five of the approved leaving certificate subjects, one of which must be Irish. Technical drawing is one of 31 approved subjects on the leaving certificate curriculum. The curriculum which a school provides is a matter for the management of the particular school. Schools cannot always provide a range of subjects to suit the wishes of every student.
