Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Posts.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

486 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that City Quay National School, Dublin 2 is in danger of losing a teacher; and if he will assess the strong case for special action to retain this teacher in view of the special needs of many of the pupils. [11918/98]

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

528 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will retain a person (details supplied) on the staff of City Quay national school, Dublin 2 (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12265/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 486 and 528 together.

A teaching post at City Quay national school will be lost at the end of the current school year because the enrolment at the school declined from 162 pupils in September 1996 to 146 pupils in September 1997. The retention figure for the fifth teaching post at the school is 155.

In addition to the school's authorised staffing of a principal and four teachers for the 1998-9 school year, it will continue to have a remedial teacher and a concessionary teacher on account of the disadvantaged status of the school. Furthermore, the school will also continue to have the services of a home school liaison teacher.

The school recently made a submission to the Department on its overall staffing needs and it is currently being examined by my Department.
