523 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to ensure that the positions of teachers' assistants are regularised within the school system rather than relying on FÁS schemes as it currently operates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department currently funds the employment of child care assistants in special schools and special classes catering for children with special educational needs. Funding is also provided for the employment of child care assistants under the early start pre-school programme.

I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the child care area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed to maximum effect. The issue raised by the Deputy will form part of this consideration.
