Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

532 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if the distance will be measured between the residence of a person (details supplied) in County Dublin and Tallaght Regional Technical College in view of the fact that the route is more than 15 miles, and this person should be entitled to a non-adjacent third level grant. [12332/98]

Under the student support schemes, maintenance grants are payable at either adjacent or non-adjacent rates. The adjacent rate of maintenance grant is payable where the grant-holder's normal residence is 15 miles or less from the college which he or she is attending. The non-adjacent rate of maintenance grant is payable in all other cases.

I understand from Dublin Corporation, the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the higher education grants scheme, that the normal residence of the student in question is within 15 miles of Tallaght Institute of Technology and that therefore the student is only entitled to the adjacent rate of maintenance. Under the terms of the scheme the local authority is responsible for determining the rate applicable in each particular case.
