Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Job Protection.

Andrew Boylan

Ceist:

109 Mr. Boylan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will give an assurance that every effort will be made to ensure the viability of a company (details supplied) and, in particular, the protection of the jobs of the very skilled workforce in view of the examiner's report. [11690/98]

The examiner was appointed to this company on 2 April 1998 after several court hearings. Although the examiner subsequently applied to the court on 15 May to have his examinership brought to a close on the grounds that he could not draw up a viable scheme to refinance the company, the court acceded to a request to extend the period of the court's protection to the company for a further 30 days from 27 May 1998.

I welcome the opportunity this extension has afforded all parties to consider the range of issues involved in safeguarding the future viability of this business and the protection of the jobs at stake. I understand that a further court hearing is due to take place on 29 May at which the company is to provide details of its refinancing proposal to the court. In these circumstances the Deputy will appreciate that developments in this company are particularly sensitive at present.

The company has been in contact with Forbairt regarding its manufacturing operations and has submitted a proposal which Forbairt is considering at present.

Forbairt, which is the appropriate industrial development agency, is available to advise and assist this company. It is monitoring the situation closely and maintaining close contact with the company in relation to this matter.
