Written Answers. - European Social Charter.

Ceist:

62 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if Ireland has signed the revised European Social Charter; if not, the reason in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14592/98]

Ireland has not yet signed the revised European Social Charter (1996). Such instruments are signed and ratified only when the necessary legal provisions are in place to allow fully for proof of compliance. The question of signature and ratification is being examined at present in my Department.

Ceist:

63 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if Ireland has ratified the Turin Protocol for the observance of the European Social Charter; if not, the reason in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14593/98]

On 14 May 1997, Ireland signed, without reservation as to ratification, the Protocol amending the European Social Charter, which was opened for signature by the member states of the Council of Europe signatories to the Charter, in Turin on 21 October 1991.
