Vol. 492 No. 5

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

66 Mr. Allen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason a work permit is not being issued to a person (details supplied) which would be valid up to 31 December 1998 in view of the fact that she advised in a letter dated 15 May 1998 that he was receiving such a permit. [14632/98]

In January of this year an application for renewal of a work permit was received in my Department from a company in respect of an individual bearing the same name and surname as that supplied by the Deputy. A permit was issued by my Department to this individual valid up to 31 December 1998.

Subsequently, inquiries were made by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in regard to an individual bearing the same name. The Minister was informed that the application had been granted.

However, it then transpired that an error had been made and that the Minister's inquiry actually referred to a different person. The confusion arose because the two men had the same first and last names. In fact, the application about which the Minister had been inquiring had been refused. The confusion that arose in this case is regretted.
