Ceist:

243 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science the composition of the Com mission on School Accommodation Needs; when the commission was established; the number of occasions it has met; when he expects to receive a final report including recommendations from the commission; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Commission on School Accommodation Needs consists of a steering group representative of the partners in education and technical working groups which report to the steering group. The composition of the steering group is given in the attached statement which I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The commission was established in March 1996 and the first task undertaken was the rationalisation of vocational education committees. The final report on this matter was concluded at the end of 1996.

Task two related to the question of the criteria for the recognition of new primary schools. The technical working group published its report at the end of January 1998. The full steering group met on six occasions and the working group, volunteered from the steering group, on four occasions, in relation to task two.

I expect to receive a report and recommendations from the steering group on task two later in the year.
