Vol. 493 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teaching Posts.

Andrew Boylan

Ceist:

264 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for refusing a grant for a remedial teacher to Killygarry national school, Killygarry, County Cavan, in view of the fact that Crubary, Coilurgan and Farnlaw national schools will have access to a remedial teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16786/98]

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

270 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a large number of primary schools in County Cavan have no access to a remedial teaching service; if he will make appointments to these schools on a shared basis with effect from September 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16820/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 264 and 270 together.

I am aware of the cases made by the schools in question for a remedial teacher service. I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the remedial area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible.

As a first step in this process, I intend to allocate additional remedial teacher posts to primary schools for the forthcoming school year. I expect to be in a position to make an announcement on this in the near future. The needs of the schools to which the Deputies refer will be considered in the context of any additional remedial teacher allocations which are undertaken.
