Vol. 493 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

272 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he is in a position to offer suitable educational facilities for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin. [16824/98]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers.

There are currently two classes for children with specific learning disability in St. Oliver Plunkett National School, Malahide. However, I understand both classes are full for the coming school year.

My Department has recently sanctioned the establishment of a special class for children with specific learning disability in Scoil Naomh Colmcille, Newbrook Road, Donaghmede. A proposal to establish a further special class to cater for such children in the North County Dublin area is under active consideration in my Department at present.

I have asked my Department's inspectorate to take the needs of the child referred to by the Deputy into consideration in the context of the special class developments taking place in North County Dublin.

Ceist:

273 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 179 of 18 December 1997, he has completed his investigation as promised in relation to the provision of another special class in one of the post-primary schools in Swords, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16825/98]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that following receipt of a recent recommendation from the psychological service of my Department a temporary post was sanctioned for the 1998-99 school year to deal with special needs pupils in Fingal Community College, Swords.
