As I have previously advised the House, I recently made payments of almost £37,000 to six of the fisheries development societies to match funds raised by them from share certificates in 1996. Payments to two societies, including the one referred to, have been held over pending clarification of some issues which arose from an examination of their accounts and on which I am awaiting a response. The 1997 accounts of the society in question, on which payments for that year will be based, have recently been received and are being examined in my Department.
