The hostilities between Ethiopia and Eritrea which broke out at the beginning of May are potentially disastrous for both countries, both in terms of human suffering and also economic development. The EU has called on Ethiopia and Eritrea, most recently at the Cardiff European Council, to cease hostilities and enter into negotiations. It has confirmed its support for mediation efforts under way and offered to provide any material assistance that could help achieve a negotiated settlement. Ireland is supporting a number of small projects through an Irish NGO in Eritrea.
