Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Agricultural Schemes.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

230 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the estimated amount of all grant aid that will be paid to farmers in 1998; the number of farmers that will receive one or more payments of a grant, subsidy, premium or any such payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18751/98]

The amount that is expected to be paid directly to farmers in 1998 under the various schemes operated by my Department is of the order of £1 billion. There are approximately 149,000 farms in the country and it is expected that most of these will qualify for one or more payments of a grant, subsidy and-or premia in 1998. Individual farmers may participate in more than one scheme administered by my Department.
