Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cereal Crops.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

283 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Health and Children the regulations, if any, there are banning the planting of rape seed close to centres of population; the plans, if any, he has in this regard; the reports, if any, there are suggesting the introduction of regulations; the reports, if any, there are suggesting that this seed is unhealthy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18286/98]

Regulations relating to the planting of cereal crops, such as oilseed rape, are the responsibility of the Department of Agriculture and Food. That Department has advised that there is no legislation in place restricting production of this crop nor are they aware of any scientific evidence or reports that it presents a risk to human health.
