Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

286 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children the most recent hospital waiting list figures broken down by hospital and by speciality; the total number of temporary bed closures by hospital to date in 1998; and the average period of the closure. [18289/98]

Temporary bed closures are used to facilitate ward refurbishments and annual leave for staff in the hospital services. They also take place in the context of effective bed management which forms a normal part of budgetary management strategy and must be set in the context of actual hospital activity for this year. In the period January to June 1998 total discharges for all hospitals have been almost 4 per cent up on the same period last year.

In addition, the number of overnight hospital beds available does not reflect the complete picture of activity in modern hospitals. For example, trends in medical practice in recent years have been for a marked shift in care from in-patient level to day case and out-patient level together with reduced average lengths of stay and increased bed occupancy rates. To illustrate this point, overall acute hospital in-patient activity for January to June 1998 shows an increase of 1.11 per cent over the same period in 1997, while the corresponding increase in day case activity is 9 per cent.

The numbers of people on waiting lists at the end of June 1998 and the total number of temporary bed closures to date in 1998 are set out in the following tables.
