Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disabled Persons Grant Scheme.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

326 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his Department will review the disabled person's grant scheme to allow more than one application in the life-time of a disabled person for the same dwelling in view of the changing requirement of the disabled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18566/98]

Under the Housing (Disabled Persons and Essential Repairs Grants) Regulations, 1993, a local authority may pay a disabled persons grant in respect of works of adaptation that, in the opinion of the authority, are reasonably necessary for the purpose of rendering a house more suitable for the disabled person. Subject to the regulations, it is a matter in individual cases for local authorities to determine eligibility for a grant and the type of works for which a grant may be given. The regulations do not prohibit the payment of a second grant in respect of a house.
