Vol. 494 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy De Rossa. I now call on the Deputy to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I thank the Chair for the opportunity to make this request. I found out today that the Government may be making a decision on this matter before the House has time to debate it. In accordance with Standing Order 31, I request leave to move the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following matter of public interest, namely, the imminent decision by the Government regarding the approach to be adopted by this country on the next round of EU Structural Funds, the consequences for people living in disadvantaged areas, especially in cities, if funding is sought for western and Border counties only and the urgent need for the Dáil to discuss this issue before a final decision is made by the Government. I am seeking the adjournment because the business this week——

It is not in order to continue beyond the substance of the motion.

I am only explaining the reason for it.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

Surprise, surprise.
