Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

417 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason the bus transporting children in the Glanmire area to St. Coleman's School, Midleton, County Cork, and other schools in the Midleton area, will not travel into the Little Island area to pick up the children, approximately 15 children involved, to eliminate the dangers facing the children in view of the fact they have to cross a railway level crossing and a busy road to get the bus at 8.10 a.m. each morning. [18376/98]

The pupils to whom the Deputy refers previusly availed of a privately operated bus to Midleton, but this is no longer in service. On receipt of their applications for transport, my Department facilitated the pupils in question with transport on the existing service operating to Midleton.

Transport is being provided for them from a pick-up point about one mile from Little Island Village. As this is considered a reasonable level of service in the overall context of the scheme, I regret the present arrangement is the most that can be offered.
The school transport scheme involves travel throughout the entire country in both remote rural areas and populous urban centres. All routes are examined with regard to the suitability of the roads for the various types of vehicles used. Safe set-down, turning and pick-up points are carefully selected, always with safety in mind.
