Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

440 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science the distance from the secondary schools in Killarney, County Kerry, and the distance from the secondary school in Killorglin, County Kerry, to the house of a person (details supplied) in County Kerry who has applied for school transport; and which school this person is eligible for school transport to. [18564/98]

The house of the person in question is equidistant, 7.9 miles approximately, from the Killarney and Killorglin post-primary centres. However, since the house is located in the Killorglin catchment area, the distance to the Killarney school is not relevant for the purpose of determining eligibility.

I understand that the service to Milltown-Killorglin passes within one mile of the pupil's home, but that the pupil actually attends school in Killarney. Under the terms of the post-primary school transport scheme, the pupil may be allowed transport to Killarney from the nearest pick-up point within the Killarney catchment area, subject to the usual conditions, namely, that there is accommodation available on the bus and that no extra State cost is involved.
