Vol. 495 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

157 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if funding will be provided to introduce a dual system at Foynes water scheme in County Limerick in view of the fact that serious problems arose where one million gallons of water cascaded on to a local housing estate in December of 1997, the consultant engineers recommended this dual system to take the pressure off the existing pipe and Limerick County Council is of the view that a dual system is the preferred option. [19739/98]

Foynes water supply improvement scheme is included in my Department's 1998 Water and Sewerage Services Investment Programme as a scheme to be advanced through planning, and the local authority's proposals were approved in August last. The approval allows the local authority to commence preparation of contract documents for the scheme which involves the replacement of 507 metres of 750mm diameter main, flood diversion and advance works on the Foynes main drainage scheme, improvements to the water and fire protection systems in Foynes, the recommissioning of a 750mm diameter main and improvement works to the water treatment plant. This work will be additional to the provision of a fail safe valve control system already installed at the reservoir in Foynes by the local authority.
