Vol. 495 No. 2

Written Answers. - Phoenix Park.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

172 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the status of plans, announced by the Office of Public Works, to carry out repairs to the Magazine Fort at the Phoenix Park with a view to opening it to the public at some future date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19185/98]

A number of proposals have been made in recent years for the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park and while refurbishment of it would be highly desirable this would inevitably be a multi-million pound project. Given the demands on the funds at my disposal, comprehensive restoration of the fort is not a viable proposition at present. However, with the objective of preserving the fabric of the principal buildings, particularly the magazines themselves, roofing and repair works have been undertaken in recent years.
