Vol. 495 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mooring Facilities.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

173 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans, if any, there are to relocate the proposed site of the jetty near the east bridge at Ballinasloe, County Galway, nearer the town where a very suitable site is available which would be safer and more convenient for boat users; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19768/98]

Utilisation of the site nearer the town centre would necessitate the excavation of a new channel along what is at present a minor river, underpinning of the East Bridge, excavation of a harbour area large enough for the provision of jetties and the turning of boats, and works to take account of flooding in the winter months. It is estimated that the cost of these works would be of the order of £300,000 to £500,000 in excess of the costs of providing moorings on the left bank of the Suck. The Deputy will appreciate that funding of this magnitude could not be justified. In the circumstances, it is proposed to provide the moorings at the original location on the left bank and downstream of the East Bridge.
