Vol. 495 No. 2

Written Answers. - Services for People with Disabilities.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

72 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that there is adequate access for people with disabilities into the approximately 1,500 public offices that he has responsibility for; if his Department has carried out an up to date audit on the level of access available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19614/98]

The majority of public offices within the remit of my office have adequate access for disabled persons. A survey has been carried out which identified a range of works needed to improve access to a number of public buildings and a programme of works has been initiated to deal with this. The programme is ongoing.

I should also point out that all new buildings and major refurbishment of existing buildings undertaken by my office are designed in accordance with the building regulations with regard to access for disabled persons. I have informed the House on a previous occasion that the Office of Public Works was among the first organisations, public or private, to recognise the need to make buildings accessible for disabled persons.
