Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

32 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the discrepancy in the number of gardaí serving the general Waterford city area; the plans, if any, he has to bring the manning levels in line with the rest of the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20285/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the current personnel strength for the Waterford Garda district is outlined hereunder:

Date

Strength (all ranks)

31-12-1997

135

16-10-1998

141

It can be seen from these figures that the staffing strength of the Waterford Garda district has risen substantially in the recent past.
Garda management is also responsible for the policing arrangements of the entire Waterford-Kilkenny Garda division and any changes in policing arrangements in Waterford district are made having regard to this overall responsibility and the policing requirements of all other districts in the division.
The Garda authorities have further informed me that the staffing situation in the Waterford district will continue to be kept under review and that each time additional personnel become available, the needs of the Waterford district will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of other Garda districts throughout the country.
