Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

192 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will provide floodlighting for the restored monastery, in care of the Office of Public Works, at Abbey Loughrea, County Galway, in view of the fact it is an important tourist attraction to the area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21904/98]

Floodlighting is normally only provided at sites where there is adequate supervision and where proper maintenance of the facilities can be ensured. Abbey Loughrea which is known as Kilnalekin Friary does not satisfy these criteria. In addition, the abbey is a single storey structure only, whilst being within a graveyard where it would be difficult to site the lighting. For these reasons, I do not propose to provide floodlighting here.
