Vol. 496 No. 1

Written Answers. - Refrigerated Sea Water Tanks.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

90 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the reason restrictions have been placed on fishermen on the use of refrigerated sea water tanks, in view of the fact that this is the optimum method for carrying herring, mackerel and horsemackerel; if he will have arrangements made to have all these restrictions withdrawn; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21866/98]

Refrigerated sea water, RSW, tank boats constitute a distinct sector of the Irish fishing fleet and are subject to specific licensing terms and conditions. An application has now been made to my Department to introduce a vessel equipped with RSW tanks, and which also has dryhold storage capacity, into another sector of the fleet. The issues involved are the subject of continuing discussions with the applicant and his representatives.
