Vol. 496 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

167 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if a grant of £200,000 has been allocated to an organisation (details supplied) as announced recently; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22255/98]

The closing date for receipt of applications under the existing sports capital programme, operated by my Department, was Wednesday, 11 February 1998. It is understood that an application for funding from the organisation in question was originally made to the Department of Health and Children and was forwarded to this Department on 11 September 1998. The application was, however, received after the closing date, and too late for consideration in the context of the 1998 round of grant allocations. The organisation in question were informed accordingly by my Department on 15 October 1998.

The sports capital programme is currently under review by my Department. When the review is completed, which I expect will be towards the end of 1998, details of the revised schemes will be widely published and it will be open to the organisation in question to apply for funding under the new schemes.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

168 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will consider allocating a grant of approximately £2,000 to a group of young wrestling enthusiasts (details supplied) who wish to put on a choreographed wrestling event for young people but cannot afford the cost of a ring. [22277/98]

Under the terms of schemes operated by my Department, funding is provided to recognised national governing bodies of sport to assist in the promotion and development of their respective sports. The recognised national governing body for the sport of wrestling is the Irish Amateur Wrestling Association.
