Vol. 496 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Placements.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

175 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps, if any, his Department has taken to find a place in a school for a person (details supplied) in County Carlow in view of the fact that he has not attended school for some time; if he will appoint an official to resolve this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22236/98]

I am aware of the person named in the Deputy's question.

Selection and enrolment of pupils is a matter for individual school authorities. Where parents encounter difficulties in securing a suitable school placement, my Department liaises with local schools and where relevant, the VEC, with a view to having the pupil concerned enrolled in a school as soon as possible. In this particular case, inquiries are under way and my Department's psychological service has been requested to advise in relation to the type of school placement which would be most suitable for this student and if there are any special education needs which may need to be addressed.
