Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

126 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children if hepatitis C victims are being offered hepatitis A and B vaccination at selected treatment centres or countrywide; the take up of these vaccinations by this vulnerable group; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22246/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 124 and 126 together.

The Immunisation Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland was reconvened in December 1997 to review the Guidelines on Immunisation booklet published by the College in 1996. I understand that the committee's work is at an advanced stage and that it hopes to be in a position to finalise the revised guidelines on immunisation shortly.

As regards the hepatitis A and B vaccination of persons with hepatitis C referred to by the Deputy, I understand that the committee will be recommending that such persons be offered vaccination. My Department will be advising the designated units accordingly.
