Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Review.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

153 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the new Army brigade organisation; and the territorial responsibility, if any, each brigade has. [22995/98]

The recommendation contained in the Defence Forces Review Implementation Plan in relation to the reorganisation of the Army took effect from 1 November 1998. This means that the Army is now organised as follows: three brigades; Defence Forces Training Centre; and two logistic bases.

Each brigade consists of three infantry battalions, a field artillery regiment, a cavalry squadron, a field engineer company, a field communications and information services company, a military police company, a logistics battalion and a brigade training centre.

Broadly speaking the areas of the three brigades correspond to the areas of the former Eastern, Southern and Western Commands with the exception that the area of the former Curragh Command now forms part of the areas of the Eastern, Southern and Western Brigades. The area of the Defence Forces training centres corresponds to the area of the Curragh Camp and the Glen of Imaal.
