Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Allowances.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

252 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Finance if the correct rate of tax free allowance has been awarded to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and if this person is entitled to claim for travel expenses to and from his work each day which involves a 26 miles round trip. [22901/98]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that, based on information available to the inspector of taxes, the tax-free allowances given to the taxpayer are correct. If the taxpayer feels he should be in receipt of greater allowances then he should provide the inspector of taxes with full details of his current total income and any other information he regards as relevant. A return of income form has been issued to the taxpayer for this purpose.

With regard to travel expenses, there is no provision in tax legislation that would allow tax relief on expenses incurred travelling to and from a place of employment.
