Ceist:322 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of licensed motor vehicles to date in 1998; and the corresponding number for 1988, 1978 and 1968. [21692/98]

I am assuming the Deputy is referring to the number of vehicles first licensed in the periods in question. The tabular statement below sets out the available details requested in relation to each year to end July. The figures reflect the situation up to the most recent month of the current year in respect of which final data are available and the equivalent period for the earlier years.
Statistics are not available for the years 1968 and 1978 in respect of a monthly breakdown for used, imported, vehicles licensed for the first time. However the full year outturn for this category was 3,195, 1968 and 4,733, 1978.
